Tournament Report – FactoruM July 2021 – Adeptus Mechanicus

The event

The FactoruM July tournament is the first one of its kind to be held at the new FactoruM Venue over in Wiltshire, UK.  The Event itself was hosted via a combination of the guys at FactoruM and the guys over at Vanguard Tactics. They did a great job and the event is absolutely one of the best we've been to.

If anyone is local they're hosting another one in August 2021 and I'm sure they'll be doing many more so check them out.

The List

So going on with the changes from the last tournament I've made the adjustments I discussed in my wrap of the tournament.

Arrival

The first thing we noticed was the terrain. Without a shadow of a doubt, this has to be one of the best terrain layouts at tournaments I've been to. Both Joe and Liam agreed the sets on the tables gave us everything you would want from a tournament. There was dense terrain, large L-blockers, smaller L-blockers with windows. It looked great and was very functionable with the the ability to remove the top and middle sections, roofs and "tree's" really easily. Nothing is worse when you have great looking terrain that is really cumbersome to use.

It’s been a fair while since I've played a full Guard army. None of the TOMD guys own Guard and with Tournaments effectively suspended for a year It’s not surprising I haven't come across them. I know they are not in the best of spots but I’ve played Cad before and he’s a great player so it should be a good game. I've taken Uncharted Sequencing, Grind Them Down and Direct Assault. Direct Assault and Unchartered should be good picks here, I can hold the middle more effectively with Skitarii than Cad can with Gaurdsmen, similarly with the other objectives for my Unchartered. Grind Them Down is a pretty solid pick, Cad has A LOT of units and a lot of small easy to kill ones at that.

Cad wins the first turn and pushes out with both his Valkyrie’s dropping both units of Bullgryn to respond to my Infiltrators on either side of the field. A few shots come my way but it's the Bullgryn that do most of the lifting this turn, killing 9/10 of the Infiltrators. I did interrupt and pop Assassin Constructs and Chain-Taser Protocol to try kill a couple on the other side but fail to kill more than one thanks to a CP re-roll.

4BAE60C9-4D47-420D-89B7-8AAA559222A6

My first turn, I pop the Ironstriders out and delete a Tank Commander, he does trade them next turn with his Tank Commanders and Valkyrie but I feel like I need to put a bit of pressure on the back line. The rest of my army moves up slightly and starts taking out Guardsmen Squads left right and centre. My Fusilave managed to take out his Platoon Commander as there was a little spot I could sit in where he was the closest model. My Dragoons charge into his Bullgryn and kill all but one of them who promptly falls back next turn.

Cad continues to put the pressure down picking up quite a few Skitarii with his Tank Commanders. However, with a Solar flare on the Dragoons a charge into the Bullgryn from them and an advance and charge from the Ruststalkers via the Expedited Purge Protocol stratagem from the Veteran Skitarii cohort into the Tank Commanders the game takes a pretty swift turn and by turn 5 I have a very strong first win with a 100:57.

Cad played a great few early turns, maxed out on his secondaries and primaries where he could but Guard do struggle against Ad Mech, they don't have the staying power Ad Mech does and despite having cheap bodies with some pretty good shooting.

The Game:

So we’ve started the Gauntlet. I knew with such a strong win in the first game, the next game was going to be hard. If I win this one, then the whole tournament is going to be a tough one.

I'm going against Ben, again we’ve played before and he gave me a real tabling a few years back at the height of Ynnari. I managed a win against him last year just after COVID restrictions were raised so we’re 1:1! He’s brought a really interesting list here. And this is absolutely one I need first turn with. Those none line-of-sight shooting units he has will tear me a new one as they pick up a unit of Skitarii a turn. I’ve gone Grind Them Down - lots of transports and small MSU units should be okay here, Uncharted Sequencing and Raise the Banners. Raise is a bit of an odd one two directly in my deployment zone but with no real effective units to do the action it might be a struggle.

I get the first turn! This is great, I Solar Flare the Ironstriders with all the buffs in the world and snipe out his Night Spinner. The short deployment map really helped here. My forward unit of Infiltrators advance up and I use the Expedited Purge Protocol stratagem and a command point re-roll in this turn to make sure they get up there. They charge his Shadow Spectres, and another 2 stratagems later down all 9 of them stealing 10 points of To The Last straight away.

807F0928-9153-4E95-8282-49EF29EAAD57

The rest of the game goes into this odd trading game, where Ben rightfully picks up units of Skitarii a turn even despite their 5++. The Veteran Skitarii Vanguard prove to be a bit more difficult with their immunity to blast but by Turn 4 I’ve completely run out of units, I have my Ruststalkers, a handful of Vanguard and Characters left… I make a last ditch effort to try to claim his back objective for my last Sequencing, my Ruststalkers plant a Banner on turn 5 and Ben takes the middle objective, killing my Marshall and remaining Skitarii.

The end result is an incredibly tight 80:76. We talk through how close it was and admit that Ben’s choice on To The Last as opposed to No Prisoners was what really claimed the game for me. Had he taken No Prisoners he’d be up about 3-4 points instead of down 4. It was a really tight game and Ben’s list is absolutely designed to take on the Ad Mech horde lists.

This leaves me with two wins and going into the third game, looking at the other tables I’m going up against Drukhari or Sisters.

So the first of the Drukhari menace! The list is pretty standard to what I’d expect other than the addition of the Grotesques. I haven't fought these since the last codex and I’m pretty sure they hit really hard - they are Drukhari after all.

I’ve taken Grind Them Down (a standout secondary for me already.) Drukhari have a lot of MSU and lots of Transports so it should be pretty straightforward. Uncharted Sequencing is another one that's been doing great for me. Finally, I’ve taken Priority Targets, this mission is always a bit of an easy one with the secondary so it seemed a good final choice.

Once again we got the first turn! This makes a big difference from the Kent Tournament last weekend. I Teleport the Ironstriders out with Solar Flare and gun down a Raider straight away. The Fusilave picks up most of the Bloodbrides that fall out and heartbreakingly they fail their morale check and two of them run away leaving just one left. Another Raider gets popped and my Infiltrators pick up a unit of Incubi. My Dragoons pick up the Wracks (or Mandrakes I can never remember the difference…) near my deployment zone.

Liam responds by going straight after my Ironstriders with Drazhar and pushing out with the rest of the Raiders. He picks up a handful of Skitarii and only one Ironstrider thanks to the Luminescent Blessing and Veteran Cohort Feel No Pain stratagem.

E70B79E3-2251-4EC7-9E78-487DE0F7E03A

I continue pushing up with my force scoring Max on my Secondaries bar two turns and denying Liam Primary for turns 2 and 4. He does end up scoring 14/15 on Herd the Prey thanks to none of my units ever being “wholly” within table quarters.

This proved to be a pretty standard game for me against Drukhari, generally I find if I can hit them hard, turn one and down one of their main melee assets early I can usually snowball myself into a pretty big win. It helps that my Vanguard and Rangers trade quite nicely into units like Incubi, Wyches and Kabalites. The Veteran Cohort gives them enough attacks to actually threaten these units without being completely wiped out thanks to their 5++ invulnerable save. A pretty tough game but I feel I executed my plan pretty well and it paid off in a big way scoring me 94 to 59.

Something I’ve noticed against Drukhari as Ad Mech, it's pretty easy to push them off objectives and force a Primary deficiency quite early on.

I was going into this game a bit nervous. Stephens is a very good player and armed with a force like the one above he can really punish someone for a slight mistake. I am favoured but it's definitely not a match-up I can relax into. I take Assassination, Uncharted Sequencing and Grind Them Down. I deployed both my Infiltrators units on one side, the side with his Repentia, hoping to draw them out early and trade my Infiltrators for them. They’re a core part of the list and if I can get them Turn 1 or 2 I can set myself up quite well going into the mid game.

Stephen got the first turn and pushed out with his whole army, complete threat saturation. This worried me a little as if I couldn’t deal with even part of his army, I’d lose an entire flank to it. Zephyrim, Sacresants and Repentia are brutal and with his Ignore invulnerable saves Miraculous Ability, not even the Lucius resilience would save any of my units.

What happened next was the wonkiest rolling I've seen in a long time. I passed 8/11 Invulnerable saves on one of my Infiltrators units (the other got annihilated.) With 3 wounds taken I decide it's worth popping 2CP to use the Bionic Endurance Stratagem to try and save at least 1 of them. I then proceed to pass enough 5+++ saves where I only lose one. They then strike back with Chain-Taser Protocols and Assassin Constructs and kill 7/9 Repentia. Stephen fails his morale check and rolls a 1 for the remaining one. This effectively cost him the game regardless of what happened elsewhere. The Infiltrator squad moved up into the ruin and killed the 5 Battle Sisters who were doing the Sacred Grounds Action.

My turn 1 was brutal. I ended the turn having killed 1300-1400 points of Stephen's army… It's at this point we effectively call the game. We play through the next turn but Stephen loses Morvenn and the rest of his Characters. By the end of my Turn 2 he has enough units left spread out to let me stagger my Grind Them Down Points and he cant contest my Unchartered Sequencing. We end the game with a brutal score of 100:31.

We spent a long time talking through after the game. We realised that if he’d hidden and just let me side on my home objectives the game would have been close but inevitably gone to me anyway. The frustrating part for me was that the recent FAQ changes would have made almost no difference in this game. I didn't use any abilities on the Dragoons or Ironstriders, I didn't use Enriched Rounds or Acquisition At Any Cost and when I did use Galvanic Volley Fire the net gain he got was that he lost 1 less character in Turn 1. Not something to write home about.

With that brutal game aside I’m sitting on 4:0 and the top spot is in sight. Looking at the second table I’ve either got another Drukhari match or a Deathwatch match with about as many 1+ armour and 4++ Invulnerable saves you can get.

FAST ATTACK
2x5 Hellions

I've taken Grind Them Down, Unchartered Sequencing and Data Intercept.

I deployed pretty defensively, leaving only my Rangers and Archeaopter in sight. (Its so difficult to hide the plane anyway.) I've left my Ruststalkers in terrain right at the back, my goal with these is to use them as a counter push once Liam's hard hitting melee units arrive into my deployment. Similarly, they can do Data Intercept pretty safely so there is a double reason to deploy them like this.

I get the first turn, which is pretty good here, it makes Uncharted Sequencing a bit more of a tricky one as my Skitarii units  have to hold the objective during his turn. Unfortunately going into Dark Eldar this is always tough as he can pretty much decide when he wants to pick up a unit of Skitarii whenever he wants. Even despite the 5++ save. I Solar Flare my Ironstriders, so they can see multiple boats, with Luminescent Blessing and Fire-Point Telemetry Cache on them they “should '' be able to weather some return fire but the plan is to remove 2 Raiders this turn anyway. My Fusilave flies over the Cronos and thanks to the ridiculous wording of its Bomb Rack ability I deal a whooping 12 mortal wounds and take 1 out straight away.

I fire everything at the two raiders and staggeringly with some awful wound rolls leave one on 1 wound and one on 3… this could be an issue… My infiltrators have lined up in front of my Ballistari in case his Incubi are thinking of making a big charge onto them.

5F3B7467-AD19-4B6B-8EC0-4D1B4673AF02

Liam responds with an equally poor shooting phase and only kills 1 Ballistarii; he has, however, tied the remaining two up with his Hellions. In turn 2 they are blasted away by one of the Lascannons allowing the second one to go straight into the ravager and it promptly does… nothing… Not the best showing for my Ballistarii! I do down the wounded raiders this turn thankfully and my Infiltrators cause havoc in his lines and take out one of the Incubi units. Liam responds by piling an inordinate amount of melee threat into them and despite their Luminescent Blessing and Neurostatic Interference they do go down pretty quickly.

The game carries on with this trading with me trying to do my absolute hardest to deny Liam any primary to the point where he still hadn’t held more than 1 objective until turn 5. He had done a good job of denying me my Uncharted Sequencing during the midgame, on turn three by killing and forcing a morale check where my Vanguard fled JUST to the right amount of models so we contested it. He did make a critical error in keeping the diminished unit of 2 alive at the top left of the table where they gained me another 5 VP for holding 2 and denied him his 5 VP on turn 4.

He had a mammoth turn 3 in which he effectively cleared the remaining 50 Skitarii in one fell swoop leaving 4 Vanguard in one squad and less than 6 Rangers on another. This was where the Ruststalkers really showed their metal, ripping through Drazhar, Incubi and the Archon, whilst also moving roughly half the board to end up on my Last Uncharted

Sequencing objective and gaining me Grind Them Down for the last turn.

What was more epic was both my Tech Priests running into combat and killing the remainder of the Scourge unit and Hellion unit taking both objectives off Liam for turn 4 meaning once again, he scored no primary in his Turn 4.

I had put all my buffs on the Ruststalkers in the last turn, but it didn't matter as Liam didn't bother going after them anyway, instead downing my Manipulus and ending the game, we scored his last Herd the Prey points, his last set of R.O.D points and his 15 for his primary and ended a very close game 65:55.

The big factor here was the continued denial of Primary Points. We talked through this at the end and with me doing such a good job in forcing him off them turn after turn, even if he hadn't made the mistake the best result would have been a 60:60 draw. Drukhari are a really tough match for any army and the fact Ad Mech can take them on but don't have an easy time doing it is credit to how strong the Drukhari book is, and in this game what a great player Liam is. He really pushed me to the limit in this game and it has to be said in the last game there's always a risk in a tough match-up that you make mistakes that could cost you the game. There were definitely things I may have done slightly differently but a 10pt differential with two low scores is still a win, even if it was my least confident one!

Final Thoughts

Initially I thought the list would massively suffer from the loss of <Core> on the Ironstriders and despite this not impacting me as much, I definitely feel like I need a bit more Anti-Tank

Going forward I think I'll drop the Dragoons (big sad face for me here as they're my favourite unit.) For another 10 Ruststalkers. These guys well over-performed this weekend and were an absolute monster whenever they got to Combat. With the extra points left over I could add a few Arc Rifles in the Units, I quite missed the one I had at the Kent Tournament.

Looking at the Meta as a whole, it's obvious Drukhari are still a fantastic army and can really compete against my Robot/Cyborgs. I think both armies are warping the meta far too much though, Admech to a greater degree. It says a lot that the 2 Drukhari armies and the odd but still very effective Craftworlds/Harlequins mix were my most difficult match-ups.

Still it's amazing to be playing in tournaments again and its been great to finally get my Ad Mech out on the table. Having almost doubled my collection size and painting them over Lockdown it's great getting use out of them!

Thanks for reading and hope to get another tournament report out soon! Our normal Battle Reports will continue from Saturday!
